Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate

**2 spots left!

sara beth fair plein air festival award winning alabama plein air artist

This class is will be an experience for you as an artist to focus on how to better express yourself and your style. My goal is to give you an understanding of the tools to create art with a sense of light, emotion, variety of mark making and good design while allowing your personality to come through. These fundamentals are required for you to take an ordinary subject and see with artists eyes the beauty to elevate it to your own piece of art. We will study masters works along with creating our own large studio piece.

Come with a humble, positive and open mind and be prepared to walk away as an artist.

WHERE:

I have painted for several years in the beautiful area around Cooke City, Montana including Beartooth Pass and Yellowstone's Lamar Valley and I have decided to share it with others. It is one of my favorite places on this earth and the absolute best for plein air painting.

WHEN:

1 DAY PRE-ORIENTATION - Tentatively SATURDAY, MAY 2, 9:00 am - 4:30 pm. 3632 Lookout Drive, Huntsville, Al or ZOOM

ON-SITE -July 14-19, 2026. A welcome reception will be held on the evening before the workshop at 7:00 pm..

HOW LONG:

Most 5-day destination workshops in the US that I have attended take 1 day for orientation and concept review and have at least 1 day of sightseeing. That really leaves little time to paint.  To make the most of your time, this will be a 4-day onsite workshop with a 1-day orientation that will be included about 1-2 months before in my studio to not only review process and paint studies of the area from photos, but also review gear, answer questions, and get you ready, etc. The on sight workshop will begin with a welcome gathering the night before the workshop begins. Our day will typically be from 9-4:30, however you can stay longer and paint. . We will have one evening critique, one evening optional painting possibly in Lamar valley as the days are long here in the summer.

COST:

The cost of the Workshop is $650. You can pay a deposit of $200 to hold your spot. The balance will be due by April 1, 2026. The deposit is refundable less a $25 processing fee if requested prior to April 1, 2026. After April 1, 2026 you will forfeit your deposit.

HOW TO ADD SIGHTSEEING TO THE WORKSHOP:

I think it is best if I let you plan your sightseeing and not make it part of the workshop (or cost).  So, you should make time before or after the workshop to add to your trip and see the gorgeous area.

CAN SPOUSES COME:

Spouses are definitely invited. There is so much to do and see in the area. See info below for ride sharing.

TRAVEL/WILL I NEED A CAR:

I always fly into Billings and drive through Red Lodge to Cooke City over the beautiful Bear Tooth Pass. To make the trip really fun you can drive home on Chief Joseph Highway and stop in Cody on your way back to Billings. If you are really adventurous go through Yellowstone down to the Tetons and Jackson then back up to Billings.

You will need a car as we will meet each morning at a location near Cooke City to discuss the day's plans then caravan to the painting spots typically about 15-30 minutes away. If you have a spouse coming, they will most likely need to drop you off at our daily meeting spot then you can arrange with another participate to ride with them to the painting location. (See below)

A list of Participates will be shared in case you want to fly together and/or meet at airport and share a rental car.

WHERE WILL I STAY AND EAT:

LODGING OPTIONS FOR WORKSHOP DATES

  1. Skyline Guest Ranch   https://www.skylineguestranch.com/

    (406) 426-1048 You must call to book (cant do it online) and let them know you are part of our group.

  • I have reserved 7 rooms at the Skyline Guest Ranch in addition to booking mine (and my husband) there as well. THEY WILL HOLD THESE FOR 6 WEEKS

  • This is where we will base the workshop, meeting here each morning to review plans for the day. It is 5 minutes from Cooke City and 10 minutes from Yellowstone. In the other direction it is 10 minutes from our painting spots.

  • The lodging comes with a full breakfast each day. We will go into town to eat dinner on our own but will probably book a group dinner here for one night even if you are not staying here. They are also going to offer a sack lunch for purchase to all of our participates.

  • The rooms are first come first serve so book early

  • You must call them to book since they are reserved for us. Make sure to let them know you are part of our group.

  • If you are interested in sharing a room to split the cost, as a few of the rooms have two beds, let me know and I will connect you with other participates who have the same desire.

2.  Other options are the Big Bear Lodge and the Big Moose Lodge. These are just about 2 minutes from the Skyline Ranch and they are right across the street from each other. They are clean and very reasonably priced and include breakfast. I have stayed at these cabins many times and the owners are wonderful ( a mother owns one and the daughter the other!) I did not reserve any rooms here for our group so I am not sure what their availability is.

https://bigbearlodge.info/

https://bigmooseresort.com/?utm_source=AllTrips&utm_campaign=AllTrips-AllRedLodge.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_content

3. There are some motels in Cooke City but I know nothing about them. You can easily do a search on the internet. We have rented an airbnb in Cooke City before that was fun.

Dinners are on your own but there are a couple of restaurants in Cooke City where we can eat as a group or on your own.

IS THE WORKSHOP IN OIL OR WATERBASED MEDIUM and WHAT ABOUT THE PAINTING LOCATIONS:

The workshop is taught in oil. I will show you how to get your paintings transported. We will be painting where their is parking and we can easily walk to the sites. There will not be bathrooms so you will have to "squat" behind a tree.
